Troubleshooting
What to Do When Your Business Website Is Down
A website outage feels urgent because it can affect leads, sales, credibility, and operations. The best response is calm and methodical. Avoid changing several things at once; gathering a few facts first helps the right person identify whether the problem is the website, DNS, SSL, hosting, or a visitor’s local connection.
Confirm the scope
Open the site from a different device or network if possible. Check both the main domain and a specific page. If the site has a public status page or the hosting provider offers uptime visibility, review it. Record the exact error message, the time it began, and whether email or other services are also affected.
Check the recent changes
Most site problems have a nearby cause. Was WordPress, a theme, or a plugin updated? Did someone edit DNS, renew a domain, change SSL settings, or move hosting? Did the site recently add a new form, payment tool, or custom code? This timeline is extremely helpful to support and avoids guessing.
Do not make the outage worse
Do not delete files or database records in an attempt to make an error disappear. Do not point DNS at a new server unless you know why the current one is failing. If an update caused the problem, a restore from a recent backup may be appropriate, but first confirm that the backup predates the issue and understand what recent changes it will roll back.
Communicate and recover
If the interruption will last, use social media, a business listing, or an alternate contact method to let customers know how to reach you. Once the site returns, test the home page, important service pages, contact forms, login areas, and checkout path. Review the root cause and make a short prevention plan: update testing, stronger monitoring, better backups, or a documented DNS process.
